Community Practice Residency Program


The Creighton University Medical Center Clinic Pharmacy and Creighton University School of Pharmacy & Health Professions (CU SPAHP) offers 2, post-graduate year-1 Community Practice Residency positions.  (ASHP/APhA Accreditation Pending).
Two Positions offered

Purpose Statement:

The purpose of the Creighton University Community Practice Residency is to provide the residents with experience and confidence in the development, implementation and delivery of community-based patient care services for multiple populations through direct patient care activities, interdisciplinary collaboration, and management activities designed to foster the economic viability of patient care services. The program seeks to engage the residents in a variety of activities that facilitate leadership, enhance the clinical knowledge necessary to care for patients in a community setting, and assess competency in the aspects of practice management that involve deciding upon, planning for, marketing, and implementing a new patient care service. In addition, there is an emphasis on developing teaching skills to be used for educating patients, students, pharmacists and other health care providers as the basis for assuming a significant role in a community pharmacy and/or academia.

 Program Outcomes and Goals:

The CUMC Community Practice Residency is a twelve-month program designed to develop clinicians that practice independently and excel in designing advanced patient care services in a community setting.    The partnership between Creighton University and the CUMC Clinic Pharmacy provides the resident with a well-rounded educational experience. The program provides experiences in a variety of settings which focus on the core areas of practice specified in the ASHP/APhA Accreditation Standards including patient care and practice management. 

Residents completing this residency will be competent and confident practitioners as evidenced by their ability to:

  1. Provide direct patient care to multiple populations within the community setting
  2. Educate patients, students, pharmacists and other health care professionals
  3. Develop collaborative practices with other health care providers
  4. Exercise leadership skills in the areas of education, teaching and research
  5. Provide clear and concise verbal and written information to health care providers, patients and the community
  6. Develop investigative and problem-solving skills through the design, implementation, and completion of a research project with a manuscript suitable for publication
  7. Manage a pharmacy with a focus on providing economically sustainable patient care services

 Primary Residency site:

CUMC Pharmacy is located on the ground level of the Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. It is a community pharmacy which provides outpatient services to patients in the community, CUMC discharge patients, ambulatory clinic patients and university employees. The pharmacy is owned and operated by Creighton University and is an active teaching site for community residents, clerkship students and student employees.

Duration: 12 months (July 1 to June 30).

 In addition to the learning opportunities above, the residents will create a customized learning plan which will guide the resident’s learning throughout the year. Strong consideration will be given to areas of interest for each resident in terms of providing educational experiences. 

The residents will be required to prepare and submit a paper for publication and present a research project at the Midwest Pharmacy Residency Conference. 
 

Candidate Qualifications:

  1. The residents should be a graduate of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)-accredited Doctor of Pharmacy degree program.
  1. The applicants must be licensed, or be eligible for licensure, in the state or jurisdiction in which the residency program is conducted. 
  1. Individuals making application to residency programs that have applied for accreditation or that are accredited by ASHP must participate in and adhere to the rules of the Resident Matching Program (RMP) process as set forth in Rules for the ASHP Pharmacy Resident Matching Program.
  1. The candidates must submit a Personal Statement including short term and long term professional goals as well as why the resident is interested in the program at CUMC Pharmacy, Curriculum Vitae, college transcripts, and three letters of recommendation by February 1.

Stipend and Benefits:


The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program offers a competitive stipend. Additional benefits include paid vacation/sick time, medical insurance, and financial support to attend the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Midyear Clinical Meeting.
