Graduate Recognition and Hooding Ceremony
We encourage you to invite as many family members and friends to both ceremonies. Relatives and guests will be seated on a first-come, first-served basis and no reserved seating will be accommodated. All Creighton University facilities are handicap accessible for guests with disabilities. No tickets are needed for either the Friday night or Saturday ceremonies.
Guests are invited to bring cameras to capture memories as graduates cross the stage for the Graduate Recognition and Hooding Ceremony. Guests with cameras will be able to leave their seats during this ceremony only just before their graduate’s name appears in the program, take pictures, and then return to their seat. Please note that at the University Commencement on Saturday guests will NOT be allowed to approach the stage as a professional photographer will take individual photos that will be available for purchase.
What is hooding?
The Hooding Ceremony is where graduates formally receive the academic hood representing their profession. At Creighton University, professional degree candidates, such as M.D. (Medicine), J.D. (Law), Ph.D. (Philosophy), OTD, DPT and Pharm.D., are "hooded" with academic attire in a special ceremony held within their school. Candidates carry the hood to the stage where their name is announced and the faculty place the hood over the head of the candidate. At the Hooding Ceremony all candidates recite the oath or pledge of their profession.
Candidates for degree completion then wear the academic hood as part of their academic attire to University Commencement. The academic hood is a very symbolic piece of the academic attire that is worn over the gown. It goes over your head and looks like a medieval hood that drapes over the shoulders and flows down the back. It is made of velvet in the color of the profession (OT-ink, Pharmacy-olive green, PT-teal) and silk in the colors of the University (Creighton-royal blue and white), as well as a black cotton to match the gown. Candidates for the degrees of OTD, DPT and Pharm.D. process in academic attire, sit together, and cross the stage as their names are read by the Master of Ceremony.
