Small Group Instructional Diagnosis
Small Group Instructional Diagnosis (SGID) is way of gathering formative student feedback by conducting small discussion groups within a class. SGID is a process through which instructors can receive feedback from students at any time during a course,. Instructors can use the information to make adjustments during the course which may better facilitate student learning. Because the changes made affect students directly, and students see that their input is taken seriously, the process also has been found to increase student motivation.
The SGID uses discussion among students to provide feedback to an instructor to improve teaching, provide suggestions for improving the course, and increase communication. The SGID is given only at the instructor's request and is confidential.
While the SGID is generally used for face-to-face courses, it can also be used in the online classroom. The facilitator introduces and explains the process, then students from small groups and respond to the following questions:
- What is working well? (What is helping your learning?)
- What is not working well? (What is hindering your learning?)
- What are your suggestions for improvement?
Students can post their responses to a discussion board, within a chat session, or during a web conferencing session. Students' responses are summarized by the facilitator. The summary is communicated to the students to ensure there is consensus among students that the summary is an accurate reflection of their discussion. The facilitator then prepares a report for the instructor. The facilitator and instructor meet to review and discuss the student feedback, and consider strategies for improvement. The instructor also discusses the results with the students and indicates what changes (if any) will be made to the course.
To schedule an SGID session for your course, please complete the SGID request form.
