Biography:
A native of California Dr. Kincaid received his bachelor’s degree in physical therapy from California State University at Long Beach in 1979. After practicing as a physical therapist for five years he entered graduate school in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Michigan to pursue his interest in the basic sciences. During graduate school he became involved in studies of the functional anatomy of the basal ganglia. His doctoral thesis involved anatomical studies of the globus pallidus nucleus and the use of an animal model for Parkinson’s disease. From 1991-1995 he was a postdoctoral research associate in the laboratory of Charles J. Wilson in the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology at the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis. During this time he continued research in the area of basal ganglia anatomy using the techniques of intracellular recording and staining of single cortical neurons, population tract tracing, light and electron microscopy and anatomical reconstruction of axonal arborizations to define the characteristics of the cortical innervation of the striatum. He has taught gross anatomy, histology, neuroanatomy and research techniques to graduate, medical, dental, occupational therapy and physical therapy students at the Universities of Michigan and Tennessee. His current research interests include studying how prions, the infectious proteins that cause the spongiform encephalopathies, enter and spread within the nervous system.
